How to Choose a Wedding Photographer and Videographer: Questions to Ask

The Short Answer
Look at full galleries, not a highlight reel, then ask who will actually shoot your day, what happens if they cannot, how many hours and images you get, when you get them, and who owns what. Get every answer in the contract. The right person is the one whose full weddings you love and whose answers are specific.
Start with Full Weddings, Not Highlights
Every photographer's best ten shots look great. Ask for two or three complete galleries from weddings like yours: same light, same size, same kind of venue. A full gallery shows how they handle a dark reception room, a rushed family list and the moments between the big ones.
For film, ask for a full ceremony edit or a long version, not just a three minute trailer. You want to hear the vows clearly, not only see pretty slow motion.

Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer
- Will you shoot my wedding yourself, or an associate? Can I meet whoever will be there?
- What happens if you are sick or have an emergency on the day?
- How many hours are included, and what does overtime cost?
- Is a second shooter included, and where will they be during getting ready?
- How many edited images should I expect, and when will I get them?
- Do I get a print release, and how long is the online gallery up?
- How do you back up the files during and after the wedding?
- Have you shot at my venue, or will you scout it?
- What do you need from me before the day: timeline, family list, contact person?

Questions to Ask a Wedding Videographer
- What do I get: a highlight film, a full ceremony edit, toasts, raw footage?
- How do you record audio for the vows and toasts?
- Can I choose or veto the music in my film?
- Do you fly a drone, and are you an FAA certified remote pilot?
- How long until the highlight film and the full edits are delivered?
- Will you work alongside the photographer without blocking each other?

Contract Lines That Protect You

- They cannot tell you who will actually shoot
- No mention of backups or spare gear

Questions Couples Ask
What are questions to ask a wedding photographer?
Ask who will shoot your day, what happens if they cannot, how many hours and edited images you get, when you get them, whether a second shooter is included, how files are backed up and what rights you have to print and share.
Is $6,000 a lot for a wedding photographer?
It depends on your area, the hours and what is included, like a second shooter, an album or film. Compare what each quote covers line by line instead of the total alone, and make sure delivery dates and the backup plan are in the contract.
Do I tip wedding photographers?
Tipping is not required, especially if the photographer owns the business. Many couples tip assistants and second shooters, or send a thank you note and a review, which helps a small business more than you might think.
Should the photographer and videographer be from the same company?
It is not required, but a team that works together often moves around each other more smoothly. If you hire two companies, introduce them early and share one timeline.
